Kicking a stream... anyone know how to do this remotely?
« on: April 13, 2012, 10:14:43 PM »
Ok so I have a live STUDIO that runs my stream 24/7.  I have also set up a laptop with a mixer for portable and REMOTE broadcasts from Seattle venues when local funk bands are playing.

Is there a way set things up so when I get setup at a REMOTE venue and I start my stream in NiceCast... it will override and kick my STUDIO stream?

Are you sending nicecast to a shoutcast server? The admin area in shoutcast has an option to kick the connecting stream. If that source is set to reconnect after say, 10 seconds, you could kick it, and squeak in with nicecast from your remote location.

Yes... my studio is broadcasting from a Shoutcast server 24/7.  So when I go on the road with my portable studio, I need to be able to kick my stream that is playing from the studio without having to have someone manually do it.

This is possible?

Yeah, that is possible. I'd still do it manually, but remotely.

I believe this will do it. (easy enough to test in any browser)

http://yourServer:8000/admin.cgi?password&mode=kicksrc

obviously substitute your shoutcast server IP, port number and password to whatever yours is.

Or you can just visit  http://yourServer:8000/admin.cgi and you will see the option to kick the source in there as a link you can click.

Now the thing with this is, you set your remote nicecast to reconnect rapidly, and you set your distant studio nicecast to reconnect slowly. This way, to kick, you start your remote nicecast, initiate the kick by visiting that url in a browser, and your remote nicecast will connect in ahead of the other one.

To adjust how fast nicecast connects, look in the docs for the advanced settings for nicecast. You can edit a filename I can't remember the name of and enter the time intervals in seconds for reconnection. Set the studio one to long intervals, like 10 seconds, and your remote one to fast intervals, like 1 second.

Using that URL... it asks me for another username / password.  Nothing I have works... hmmm.  do you know what user / pw I should be looking for?

Ok got logged in to my shout cast server's admin area where the kick button  is.  But when it comes to changing Nicecast's retry intervals... WOW, not sure why they just didn't program a simple config for this inside the software.  Their instructions say:

In the name of simplicity, not all of Nicecast's preferences are accessible from within the application. Some prefs can only be accessed through the "defaults" system in the Terminal or by editing the preferences file (~/Library/Preferences/com.rogueamoeba.Nicecast.plist) by hand.

This plist file is nowhere to be found on either one of my macs.  Also tried the command within terminal, it says cannot find file.

If you're on Lion, hit hides the Library folder by default. You can make it visible by holding the option key. So go to the Go menu in the folder, hold option, and you'll see the Library folder. You should be able to find it from there.

Got it working... THANKS SOOOOOO MUCH!!

That made my day.  Now I can fire up a remote broadcast and manage everything from that location.

Thanks Lane!
