Does anybody have any experience with running last.fm and radiologik together?

At WIDB, we're trying to get the scrobbler to pick up what radiologik has played, and after our initial import of the playacounts, it doesn't seem to be registering what we've played. I've tried activating different folders and applications for it to register as played, but no results as of yet. Any ideas on what we might be missing?

i thought scrobbler read itunes to know what is playing. Radiologik does update iTunes play counts, but the song is never playing in iTunes, and if the scrobbler relies on that, I don't see it working.

I haven't used it. Don't really know how it works exactly. Do you know where I might find some details on it?

I can't seem to find much on it.

I did find the scrobbler builds at http://build.last.fm/category/Scrobblers that are for various players, but not much beyond that. Our hope was that the Scrobbler would notice the playcounts, and that would be a good enough trigger. Apparently, it requires something from the iTunes software itself.

I have a silly question. What is the value in sending the song play information to last.fm? I'm trying to wrap my head around how that is valuable/useful etc.

Also, do you also have a website that display song titles etc.? It might be easy to add some code to this that will send the info to last.fm.

If I knew the protocol, I could probably write an apple script that watches for track changes in Radiologik DJ via ~/Library/Application Support/Nicecast/Now Playing.txt, and have it send that to last.fm. If you're willing to dig to find the technical details on transferring the data over the internet, I'm willing to work on a script. It would probably have information regard http GET or POST, perhaps XML. But in general, it would likely be done through accessing a url in a particular format to transfer the data. Let me know if you're up for that.

If it's easy, and we do the homework, there's a good chance Jay might add this as an option, or at least an advanced option in a future release.

actually, I went looking, and found it. http://www.last.fm/api/submissions

bad news is they have a few rules etc. that I need to read through. calculations for when you can sent track based on percentage of it that played, it must be sent *after* it's finished playing, etc. there are also session numbers to read and transfer back. and it looks like I'd need to identify with a client name and version number, so they can ban if it it misbehaves. it's not like I can do a quickie script on this. I'd need to study this stuff up a bit to be sure I'm following all the rules. time is short for me right now, so I couldn't do this soon.

still though, i'm curious to hear how updating to last.fm can be useful. the more I'm convinced, the more I'll be motivated to create some time for it.

Last.fm is really only useful in a sense that it would give the station another presence online that can direct people to the stream.

My attitude at implementing it was "If it is easy, why not?", since we already do have an account for last.fm, but it is on our production computer, which is used for both listening to new music and production, so sometimes there is a ton of sound effects that come up on our account.

I hadn't opened up my old last.fm account in a couple of years since finding Radiologik, but did the other day just for kicks.

I have no idea what's going on. For a long time it looked as if the iTunes play count would not trip last.fm. I tried different things and couldn't get last.fm playlists to update.

Then, later last night, my son updated his iPod for the first time since I'd installed last.fm software on this computer. For awhile I couldn't understand why last.fm kept kicking on, so we kept force quitting it. Finally, it snuck by us when we weren't looking. My son asked what it was, and when I went to show him, much to my surprise, my day's worth of Radiologik tracks were listed.

I have no idea if this was somehow triggered by the iPhone thing or what. I do know that I turned off that feature in last.fm, have been playing music in Radiologik, and once again today, see no movement in last.fm.

One of the benefits that I could see is that last.fm does give you the ability to create several different cute little charts that might be nice to display, such as Last Week's Top Artists, etc.

Sounds to me like it's updating last fm with content it thinks was played offline, like your iPod listening. So it flies through the last played stuff, and updates it. Maybe there is an easy applescript option out there that will trigger the same kind of thing. Search Doug's scripts site might have some last.fm related stuff. I just don't know much about it, and I'm speculating on what I've said so far.

I didn't see anything over at Doug's scripts, but you're absolutely correct, I've confirmed that it updates last.fm with Radiologik plays once you plug in an ipod/iphone that has last played information as well.

Not the smoothest way of updating, but maybe good enough if all a person was going to use last.fm for was to pull some of their historical charts (top artist last week, month, etc.) back onto their website.

I can see the value in this.

The Last.Fm application for Mac scrobbles in real time. If it's playing in ITunes, it gets sent to the website.

So I'm assuming the difference is it doesn't mark as played out if RadioLogik is the "playout" agent. So how to get Last.Fm to notice the RadioLogik playout in real time.

if you guys can google up an applescript method of updating last.fm. I can probably make something work with radiologik.

actually, i just realised that there's a good chance a last.fm application for mac is applescriptable. Can someone look that up? If there is one, we can probably come up with a solution easily enough.

Do you know if there are any others? That one doesn't appear to be applescriptable.

Maybe something could be done with the "universal scrobbler"?
